Filed tail factors

Estimate a California tail premium from filed factors.

This tool applies selected carrier factors to public California base rates.

A tail factor is a multiplier that a carrier applies to the stated policy premium.

MedPro admitted, NORCAL, and MIEC publish factors in the California filings used here. The tool offers no TDC estimate.

Calculate the filed-factor estimate.

Choose the carrier's class, county, and claims-made maturity. The result applies the filed factor to its stated premium basis.

How the calculation works.

The specialty and county locate the carrier's filed mature $1M/$3M claims-made premium. The tool then applies the selected extended-reporting factor.

MedPro and NORCAL use the mature premium. MIEC uses the expiring annual premium, including its current claims-made rate step.

Compare the factor basis.

Carriers do not always apply tail factors to the same premium. This table converts first-year values to a mature-premium basis.

Tail factor basis conversion
Carrier Mature-equivalent tail First-year comparison Filed basis
MedPro admitted 1.820x 0.900x mature premium Filed tail factor x mature claims-made rate.
MIEC 2.00x at maturity 0.638x mature premium Filed 2.00 factor x expiring step-level premium; first year is 2.00 x 0.319.
NORCAL 2.25x 0.91x mature premium Filed ERE factor x mature specialty/territory base rate.

Why there is no TDC estimate.

The Doctors Company provides free tail coverage on retirement, disability, or death. There is no premium to estimate, which is why the tool shows no TDC figure. The extended-reporting terms live in the countrywide manual rather than the filed California record, so read them in the issued policy.

Check retirement and disability benefits.

The issued policy defines any death, disability, or retirement provision. Do not infer these terms from a public rate table.

How the estimator reaches the number.

The estimator uses each carrier's own rate, territory, specialty, and tail factor data. It does not map classes across carriers.

MIEC premiums use its filed state base rate, geographic multiplier, and class multiplier.

  • MedPro admitted rates and factors come from 2013 rate pages. MedPro RRG has no public CDI rate manual.
  • NORCAL rates and tail factors come from the corrected 2015 California manual.
  • MIEC rates and its current factor basis come from the 2023 approved manual.
  • TDC's California rate manual is 2014, but its public California filing contains no tail factor table.
